The Performance Improvement of Hot Mix Asphalt and Enhanced Applicability to Pavement Structure Thickness Design Using DAMA
(Drain Asphalt Modified Additive)

1. Introduction

The roads in Korea have been paved with latest asphalt paving technology since the late 1960's. Nevertheless, after more than 3 decades, the inherent problem with the asphalt concrete pavement, which is the deterioration of the structural elements at high temperature and cracking at low temperature, has not been solved satisfactorily. The road pavement in the city and important highways, where heavy vehicles pass through, are subject to deformation of rutting especially due to high temperature in summer and low temperature cracking due to repetitive load bearing especially in winter. In order to overcome these problems, HMA design and the grade changing of the asphalt binder have been tried in the past with some improvement. Nowadays, new additive materials have been developed to improve the physical and chemical properties of asphalt binder.

This investigation has the research objective of obtaining data to apply in pavement thickness design by studying the effect of adding DAMA to 5 kinds of asphalt mixtures (dense graded 19mm, drain graded 13mm, drain graded 19mm, superpave graded 19mm, SMA graded 19mm).
