Highway pavement with high functioning
|
Highway pavement is being changed. When we drive highway and it rains, it does
not influence us and the vehicle running in front does not generate a spray, and
noise in the vehicle is lowered, and also we may comfortably drive even in rainy
night as headlight is not diffusively reflected. We may see this pavement in all
national highways in the near future. In this column, we focus on this
pavement. Now, JH is expanding this pavement with drainage and low-noise
functions[high-functioning pavement](drainage pavement) to the whole country.

In high-functioning pavement, compounds having air void ratio of about 20%
are used and so a water pool is hardly created. Consequently, a spray is rarely
generated by traveling vehicles going ahead, hydroplaning(vehicles slide rainy
road) does hardly occur, and a lane is more easily distinguished in
raining.
At the same time, it makes traveling conditions good in raining
by reinforcing resistance to sliding of wheels. Besides, as air void absorbs
noise from contact of running wheels and road surface, it lowers traffic noise
and improves the living environment.

Over 10,000 persons were killed in traffic accidents in 1998. Now traffic
accident has become a serious social issue. The number of traffic accidents is
over of opening to traffic and traffic volume, and the number of the dead from
traffic accidents was sharply increased in 1988 and it was 418 in
1991.
- Mortality rate in raining is about 7 times higher than in clear days (data
in 1995).
- More accidents occurs in wet condition than dry condition.
- More accidents occurs at quaking points, at right curve(left curve in Korea)
and during detouring in wet condition.
