- While the number of waste tires increases more than 2million units annually
as automobile industry grows, there are not enough facilities to treat or
recycle them properly. Consequently, environmental contamination and loss of
resources from junk tires have been emerging as a social issue. Particularly,
considering the fact that the majority of waste tires are utilized for just
simple applications such as building encampment in the military, recycling of
waste tire is sure to be an important issue in the context of national economy
and environment as well..
- According to the statistics, the number of junk tires produced or imported
by five domestic waste tire manufacturers and 13 importers has constantly
increased to 22 million in 1997. Supply and sales of tires for new automobiles,
however, have been sluggish as demand for automobiles has decreased due to
excessively brisk car market since 1995. 63% of waste tires comes from sales
agencies or vehicle repairing shops and the rest 37% from car scrappers. Though
it is forecast that the number of waste tires will be reduced because of recent
economic recession and downing distribution rates of vehicles, etc., decrease in
demand for waste tires from the Ministry of Defense since the second half of
1996 is expected to deepen the problem of waste tires.
