Main damage on the asphalt according to AI(asphalt Institute)
and SHRP(Statigic Highway Research Program) for the main category of asphalt,
road design, ascon match design, construction management was Rutting(plastic
deformation) for the first place. The cause of rutting was analyzed to be wrong
estimation of traffic amount, wrong choice of materials of Marshall match
method, inadequate construction management. The use of PMA(Polymer Modified
Asphalt), which has high elasticity in high temperature and anti-aging effect in
low temperature and rough aggregate is necessary to lower the rutting effect on
the aspect of binder and aggregate. Very high results are shown in wheel
tracking test results when the PMA is applied on 70% of aggregate that is not
thinner than 3mm but between 5mm and 13mm. This improves the quality of ascon,
thus it can e used to create the asphalt, which maintains durability, prevents
plastic deformation in summertime and prevents cracking in wintertime.
