Preparation for the application
|
|
Checking and maintaining the equipment
|
| |
Construction equipment has to be checked and serviced to
be in a good working condition to prevent a poor construction. |
|
Warming up of equipment and tools
|
| |
Application of ECOPHALT is done at a higher temperature
than conventional asphalt mixture, screed, temper, spade, and rake of the
finisher need to be warmed up before starting the work. Check and clean the base
or intermediate layer before starting the construction. Keep the surface of base
or intermediate layer without humidity, dust, soil before applying ECOPHALT
mixture. |
|
Tack coating
|
| |
To improve the adherence of ECOPHALT mixture, tack coating needs to be
evenly done and sufficiently treated prior to applying ECOPHALT mixture.
|
| |
Material : As the tack
coating agent RC-0, RC-1, or emulsified rubber asphalt (RC(C)-4) is appropriate,
which should be used within 60 days of production. |

Tack coating should be conducted surface without humidity, aggregate, dust,
or other unwanted material. A distributor that can spread asphalt agent
evenly shall be used, and a hand spray can be used in the case of a small scale
construction. |
| |
- Tack coating should be done at a temperature of 5¡É or higher. (Needs to be
stopped when raining) Too much asphalt agent should not be used on a cement
concrete pavement.
- When spraying asphalt agent, hand rail of bridges, median strip and kerbs
should be covered not to be contaminated.
- On site test shall be done to make sure adequate amount is sprayed.
- If spraying asphalt agent has not been done evenly, a tire roller shall be
used to make the coating even.
- After spraying the emulsified asphalt, enough time has to be given for the
material to be sufficiently dried.
- In the case of paving the second layer rightafter the base layer has been
laid down, clearing may be dispensed with if there is no unwanted material.
- Joint treatment has to be thoroughly made to prevent Cold Joint.
|
Construction/application |
| |
- Quality during applying the mixture effects quality of the final pavement.
- Requirement of transverse slop has to be kept precisely and needs to be
completed smoothly.
- Try to achieve consistency of surface structure.
- Temperature of ECOPHALT mixture upon being delivered, and temperature of the
mixture shall be over 150¡É. Following cautions needs to followed,
- Compaction : Over 140¡É for the first layer, over 120¡É for the second layer,
and the final layer shall be done at a temperature over 90¡É.
|
Paving with a finisher |
| |
- Once the mixture of ECOPHALT is spreaded, the pavment surface needs to be
investigated to see if there is any of the following problems; if the slop
through the transverse is not evenly spread, When the asphalt is not evenly
spread; lumpy, coarse, or only fine particles are concentrated in one region.
|
Manual paving |
| |
Paving with a finisher is strongly recommended, and even
if the paving is done manually the quality should be the same as the case of
using a finisher. |
Compaction |
| |
Once paving of ECOPHALT mixture is done, Compaction
should be commenced at an appropriate temperature. Such Compaction can be done
using MAKADAM, TIRE, TANDEM ROLLER. Considering the Compaction commences at a
high temperature, TANDEM can be used firstly.
|
Compaction procedure |
| |
- First Compaction will be done using MAKADAM ROLLER, which is relatively
light, on joint parts.
- Second Compaction will be done using a TIRE ROLLER of 8~15 ton weight.
- Final Compaction will be done using a TANDEM ROLLER of 6~8ton weight until
the trace of rollers disappear.Second and final Compaction can be done using
TANDEM)
Compaction using a ROLLER is kept at a low speed. Advancing speed,
in general, is 2~3km/hr for the case of ROAD ROLLER, and 6~10km/hr for the case
of TIRE ROLLER. |
Other cautions |
| |
Amount of reduction after the Compaction procedure is very small for the
case of ECOPHALT mixture, thickness of the first layer should be determined
through a test paving. For the case of a small scale paving, experience may be
used in deciding the thickness. Compaction of ECOPHALT mixture should be
done promptly because it cools down quickly due to porosity. Manual
modification of the surface has little effect because there is not so much fine
particles in ECOPHALT mixture. manual modification is not recommended.
When such repair work has to be done, waste from the pavement should not be
used but be discarded. Vibration should not be applied when Compaction ECOPHALT
mixture. A high level safety measure should be used when using ECOPHALT
mixture because its temperature is about 10¡20¡É higher than using conventional
asphalt mixtures. When transporting ECOPHALT mixture, dump truck should have
insulating cover. As mentioned earlier, insulation cover needs to be used when
transporting the ECOPHALT mixture. |
